Week 33: Post-Disco, Pre-House

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a tape of NY Garage (prompted by Birgitte from Norway). I went on about how that music bridged the gap between disco and house, and really paved the way for all this new-fangled 21st century electronic dance music to exist.
Meanwhile, however, there was a lot of other, more mainstream R&B that was doing essentially the same thing—just in the pop sphere. Here is a tape of precisely that—more 1980s R&B cuts that rose up from the ashes of disco to pave the way for house (and everything that followed).

Gosh, I have been away for a while, and here I find no less than two mixes of my favorite time and place in soulful dance music! Thanks!

  3. Just want to thank you for such an awesome blog. I just discovered your blog as I was doing a random searh and I'm floored by your deep knowledge on many of these genres and for digging up artistic movements that have often gone often undetected. While not an active dj anymore I'm a lister who's doing a similar project (the rym ultimate box set) in that we are trying to assemble our own compilations for the best of every significant music genre (its hard to call them mixtapes when you are so clearly mixing all of yours and we often are not). Anyway if you have time to check it out we're at rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScientist (my own profile) and I got you linked now at my blog as well. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to listen to your great tapes.
